BAL2000 is an expert system helping to analyse and interpret the bronchoalveolar lavage specimen. Version 1 (DOS) and version 2 (Win3.1) has been used in Finland over 10 years and the latest version 3 (Win 95/98/NT/XP) is based on the experience of over 800 BAL specimens.

PixArea
Flatbed scanned pictures can be used for morphometrical image analysis. However, the commercial image processing tools are often too complicated for an elementary area measurement. We describe a simple image processing application PixArea (PA), containing an instructive ”green line” menu interface. The tumour area or regions of interest (ROI) can be calculated without microscopy-based image acquisition.

PixelProstate
The cancer area of the prostate is outlined on the histological slide. Using pathologist's visual memory an identical tumour area is painted with the mouse on the virtual slide. Total prostate volume is calculated using the ellipsoidal method: 4/3 x pi x (length/2 x width/2 x height/2). A 3D picture and T-classification is automatically generated. No camera or other special equipment is needed.

an expert system developed to interpret cerebrospinal fluid, which can be used
in normal laboratory procedures, especially in the field of pathology.
